Search Engine Optimisation is an important factor in any professional web design. SEO is what makes your website appear in organic search results and the page placement depends greatly on which techniques have been incorporated into the development of your site. The type of Search Engine Optimisation that we are about to highlight is called on-page SEO and there are quite a few methods that can be used to perfect your status in search results.
In this post we would like to discuss saving images correctly, paying attention to their titles. To help your images to rank well (as well as your website as a whole), it’s important to save image files using file names that search engines like Google can easily read and understand. Google can’t actually “see” your images unless you are saving them using file names that accurately describe what each image is about. So instead of saving your files using random letters and numbers (like DSC3789.jpg), rather save them using a detailed description, ensuring that you are using the keywords you would like to rank for.
So, say for instance you own a pet store and would like to appear in the search results when people are looking to buy pet food. You would then label the relevant image as “pet-food-for-cat.jpg” – or whatever keywords your potential viewers are likely to search for that are relevant to the image. In this example, the main keyword is “pet food,” so it was placed at the beginning of the file name to help this image have a better chance of pulling up when someone enters “pet food” into a search engine.
While this step is just one tiny part in building a solid SEO foundation for your website, it can make a huge difference as to who, when and why people visit your site. We often pay so much attention to placing the correct keywords into our text, that we forget images play a huge role in how our sites are indexed too.
